A Genetic Source for Three Breeds

Tim Shearer and Irene Vietinghoff of Lynmark Farms, Norwood, ON, have the distinction of working with three breeds of dairy cattle in their barn. In the Holstein and Jersey breeds they focus on breeding a balanced animal for type and production. With their Milking Shorthorns or “Shorties” as they affectionately call them, the couple strive for purity of bloodlines while improving the breed to keep genetic diversity available to the breed and dairy industry. As of 2013 they have a homebred Excellent in all three breeds.

In the Milking Shorthorns, Lynmark Farms is home to descendants of Fieldcrest Rubin Pearl (Ex-8E-5*) who was the first 8E cow in the breed in Canada, her NowYouSee daughter Sandy EX8E is the second. Pearl's amazing life story was profiled in the New Zealand annual Milking Shorthorn magazine and in the 2012 winter issue of the American Milking Shorthorn Journal. Her granddaughter, Lynmark Out Fleece (Ex-94-3E), was voted Canadian Milking Shorthorn Cow of the Year in 2012, was Grand Champion at the National Show 2012, and CanWest DHI high production award winner. She also had embryos and offspring in Ireland and England. This family has produced multiple National show winners and the first 11 th.Gen. VG or EX for Canada in Lynmark Adam Fruitcake-P Two-thirds of the Milking Shorthorns in this herd trace back to Pearl. Hauxwell Clara 20th (Ex-5*) is the foundation of the highest indexing Milking Shorthorn family at Lynmark. Clara has 2 Excellent and 3 Very Good classified daughters, of which four have achieved over 300% BCA.Lynmark St.Clare at Semex is a Mocha son of Lynmark NS Clarica EX92-5E a Storm Ruler daughter of Clara's. This is a family that has produced show winners and CanWest DHI production award winners at the Milking Shorthorn National Show. The Lynmark show string has also earned Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor awards at their national breed show in 2013,2012,2011.

Due to a chronic lack of heifer calves, Lynmark has only 4 Jerseys at present: 2 members of the Enniskillen Mamie family and a home bred EX92-2E Senior that goes back on the maternal side to Evening, she has a Minister daughter.

The herd has had the top BCA Cow for production in Peterborough County in 2012 and 2013.Numerous cows have also made the Top Ten list in the last few years.

Tim and Irene have sold live cattle across Canada and into the United States, and they’ve also marketed embryos to Australia, Ireland,England the United States and in Canada. Lynmark Farms have young stock and embryos available on a regular basis, and the couple are pleased to say they have had repeat business especially from buyers seeking show heifers.

Visitors are welcomed at Lynmark but urged to contact them ahead. They have hosted visitors and tours from the Baltics, USA, Ireland, England,Australia,New Zealand, Peterborough County, the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Association, 4-H clubs and individual breeders.

Tim and Irene’s reasons for joining forces with the LLG group are clearly defined. “We are working with the LLG to expand our exposure to a broader market that will help us to maximize income from ET and sales. Also this is a window to make the Milking Shorthorns breed more visible to a wider market and maybe have people diversifying their herds.”
